Too Slow to Follow, Too Weak to Neglect: A Slow Manifesto

Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die. In 1970s London, when punk culture was bursting into the streets, this sentence carved onto a shop sign served as a manifesto representing the inner minds of lost youths. Existences too ahead of their time and too wild to survive, yet far too early to die. The statement of those who chose to walk to a rhythm different from society's dictated pace proposed immaturity and imperfection as a unique identity. Too Slow to Follow, Too Weak to Neglect. In 2020s, Seoul. Bee Chee Chang and Joowhan Chang propose a new sentence. It is a manifesto that renames those who are too slow to follow the speed of the world, yet too fragile to ignore the words around them. In an era where being fast and distinct is deemed the correct answer, and where we are demanded to brand ourselves just to survive, we share this exhibition of manifesto-like works born from the deeply private yet public contemplation of these two artists who move forward slowly and weakly. The two artists redefine slowness as the power to walk at one's own pace without being swayed by the world's speed, and weakness as the love to walk together—protecting oneself while refusing to turn away from the surrounding world. We hope that here, if nowhere else, everyone can freely share their own stories at their own pace, and ultimately question what love truly means. — Haeri Kim, Independent Culture Creator (Curatorial Statement))
